Transfer Station, Recycling & Waste Management

The transfer station is a town property located next to the town garage where Barnard residents bring their compost, recycling, and trash for disposal. Punch cards for disposal fees can be purchased by check at the transfer station whenever it is open, or at the Town Office.

Composting and Recycling are mandatory in Vermont by Act 148.

There is no charge for bringing compost to the transfer station. All food scraps, including meat and bones, and compostable bags are accepted.

The cost is $3 to drop off recycling. Recycling is zero-sort, meaning that metal cans and bottles, glass, aluminum cans, pans, foil, plastic containers with symbol 1-7, corrugated cardboard cut to two feet, magazines, junk mail, paper bags, cereal boxes, office paper, and newspaper can be mixed together. Please note that sometimes redeemable cans and bottles are collected for fundraisers at the transfer station, so sort those just in case!

The cost to dump trash runs from $3 for a tall kitchen bag up to $25 to throw away a large bulk item like a couch. Please see the price sheet below.
