Transfer Station, Recycling & Waste Management

New! As of March 2026, residents can recycle textiles at no cost. There is an Apparel Impact bin behind the Barnard Town Hall for residents to donate clothing, sheets, towels, footwear, and accessories. Click here to read the full list of acceptable items.

The transfer station is a town property next to the town garage where Barnard residents bring compost, recycling, and trash for disposal. Punch cards for disposal fees can be purchased by check at the transfer station whenever it is open, or at the Town Office.

There are $30 and $60 punch cards available. 

Mandatory Composting and Recycling in Vermont                        

There is no charge for bringing compost to the transfer station.

All food scraps, including meat and bones, and items labeled compostable are accepted. Paper towels and napkins are accepted unless it has been in contact with chemicals/cleaning products, human waste, or pet waste. 

The cost is $3 to drop off recycling.

Recycling is zero-sort, meaning that metal cans and bottles, glass, aluminum cans, pans, foil, plastic containers with symbol 1-7, corrugated cardboard cut to two feet, magazines, junk mail, paper bags, cereal boxes, office paper, and newspaper can be mixed together. Please note that sometimes redeemable cans and bottles are collected for fundraisers at the transfer station, so sort those just in case! 

Trash Disposal Options                                                                   

In addition to food scraps and recyclables, please divert the following from the trash: 

• Scrap metal. No charge to toss it into the roll-off.
• Batteries. No charge for household batteries.
• Waste motor oil. The cost is $1 per gallon.
• Freon Appliances. The cost is $25 per unit.
• Electronics. No charge to drop off televisions, computers, printers, and keyboards. The cost is $5 for a stereo, radio, cordless phone, or cracked television.
• Tires. The cost is $7 for a small tire and $25 for a tractor or large truck tire. NO RIMS!

The cost to dump trash is $3 for a 13-gallon kitchen bag and $6 for a larger bag.

The cost to dispose of larger or "bulk" items is based on the size and ranges from $10 to $40.

Construction debris is not accepted in Barnard and must be taken to the Royalton Transfer Station.
